Dogs are widely recognized for their exceptional sense of smell, which can be attributed to the advanced structure and function of their olfactory gland. This gland, also known as the olfactory epithelium, is a critical component of a dog’s nasal cavity and plays a vital role in detecting and processing various odours.

Anatomy and Structure

The olfactory epithelium in dogs is located in the nasal cavity, specifically in the upper region, and is composed of specialized sensory cells known as olfactory receptor neurons. These neurons are responsible for converting chemical signals from odour molecules into electrical signals that can be interpreted by the brain. Dogs have an impressive 220 million olfactory receptor neurons, compared to the 5 million found in humans, which contributes to their superior sense of smell.

In addition to the olfactory receptor neurons, the olfactory epithelium houses various supporting cells that aid in the function of the olfactory gland. Among these are the sustentacular cells, which provide structural support and nourishment for the neurons, and the basal cells, which serve as precursors for the replacement of olfactory receptor neurons throughout a dog’s life.

Function and Capability

When a dog inhales, odour molecules enter the nasal cavity and bind to the olfactory receptor neurons in the olfactory epithelium. These neurons then transmit electrical signals to the olfactory bulb, which is the initial processing centre for olfactory information in the brain. From there, the signals are sent to different areas of the brain for interpretation, allowing dogs to identify and process a wide range of scents.

Dogs have the remarkable ability to detect scents at concentrations as low as one part per trillion, thanks to their large number of olfactory receptor neurons and the expansive surface area of their olfactory epithelium. This extraordinary sense of smell enables them to perform tasks such as tracking, search and rescue, detection of explosives or narcotics, and even identifying certain medical conditions in humans, such as cancer or diabetes.
